Guilin is a major tourist attraction in itself. There are many sites, especially the mountains within the city limits.
Guilin is also the main point of entry to the area and, since you are most likely to be passing through at least once, it is well worth stopping over if you have the time.

The rice terraces of Longsheng (the Dragon's Backbone) are a major attraction. The rice terraces cascade down over the mountain ridge for thousands of feet and are an amazing sight as well as an amazing feat.
These terraces lie on the far side of Guilin so are best visited before or after your stay in Yangshuo. It is possible to make a day trip but we recommend you go there and stay in Pingan for at least one night.
Please note: Do not confuse the county town of Longsheng with the rice terraces. This town is about an hour's drive away. Pingan is the best place to visit, and to stay.
Beyond Longsheng is the road that extends up into Guizhou Province. This area is home to many ethnic minorities such as the Dong and, further up, the Miao.
A trip to this area is highly worthwhile as it remains relatively undiscovered.
