Suggested activities in Yangshuo: some ideas to fill your time whilst staying at the Magnolia Hotel

Boat Trips

A variety of boat trips are available on the Li River. The official cruise from Guilin is the longest, taking between 3 and 5 hours. You can take shorter trips out of Yangshuo, and can even combine these with other activities such as hiking or biking.

Cooking Lessons

There are several cooking schools in Yansghuo where you can learn to prepare Chinese dishes. The best schools include a trip to the market before the cooking so that you can see the local produce for sale.

Martial Arts

There are many schools offering lessons in Kung Fu or the more sedate Tai'Chi. You can take a short lesson just to get a feel, or stay for a while and really master the techniques.

Calligraphy and Painting

You don't need any painting experience to try your hand at traditional water colours. Alternatively, you can learn some elementary characters and discover the beauty of Chinese Calligraphy.

Massage

After an active day you may well enjoy a relaxing massage. Many spots offer this service; few can offer a therapeutic massage to treat ailments. If you would like to try some TCM then check out Dr Lily. Ask at reception for directions.

Restaurants

There are many restaurants in Yansghuo offering food for the locals as well as for visitors. You can try local specialities such as Guilin Noodles or Beer Fish, or satisfy a craving for Western Food if you have been elsewhere in China for a while.

Bars

Many restaurants double as bars at night; others can be bar/nightclubs. You will find an interesting mix of locals and both foreign and domestic tourists - so there is always someone to talk to.

Light Show

There are performances of the Impression Liu San Jie (Third Sister Liu) Light Show most evenings - weather permitting. This show includes three scenes from this famous folktale, is directed by Zhang Yimou, and is a must-see for many visitors.

Cormorant Fishing Show

Local fisherman have used cormorants to catch fish for generations. You can see a demonstration of the art, which includes a chance to take photos of yourself with the birds, most evenings.
